Chinese Herbs
Chinese Herbs are a big part of Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture. They developed from the same thought process as acupuncture over the centuries which was to fill a need for a suffering patient. There are approximately 450 common herbs in the Chinese pharmacopedia and are characterized by their therapeutics effects. The most common known as the imperial herbs consist of about a hundred and usually have a mythological story attached to them which is tied to the anachronistic cultural ties of it’s time period. Many of them are the same ones we have in the west such as dandelion and burdock. However the application is different and depends more on the treatment strategy which can be different from the viewpoint of western herbology. In addition they can be further classified by their chemical nature or characteristics as some are warming verses cooling. Others will address dampness or edema in the body while others will clear phlegm, stop bleeding or aid in digestion. The science of Chinese Herbs developed over time through a period of trial and error with willing subjects. Many of the treatment protocols although thousands of years old are still recognized as the standard of practice today in the Asian countries. The Shang Han Lun for instance was written over 2500 years ago and still has relevancy to the modern practice of medicine. Most Chinese Herbs are easily obtainable today and are often sold as tablets instead of raw form. Most acupuncturists are trained in the use of Chinese Herbs and often can help with a recommendation as an addition to the treatment process. This is an important option for individuals who wish to be more proactive or have have reactions to common everyday pharmacological drugs.
