Acupuncture and Chronic Fatigue

Acupuncture and Chronic Fatigue

Acupuncture and Chronic Fatigue, Acupuncture and Chronic Fatigue has become more of an option for those who are tired and run down and cannot get answers from the medical profession. In the context of Chinese medicine it is seen as a deficiency pattern known as xu lao  by the acupuncturists.  In the western model Chronic Fatigue is almost a ‘trash can ‘ diagnosis and treatment can run from NSAIDS for tension headaches and arthralgias,  Wellbutrin for depression and intramuscular injections of Vitamin B-12 shots for overall pep. The patient can undergo months of treatment and never come up with a qualified success for their chief complaint. By contrast in using Acupuncture and Chronic Fatigue balancing the liver is almost always involved in one pattern or another. This is not surprising when one considers the roles liver plays from a metabolic standpoint. Iron metabolism, blood sugar balancing and the body’s energy mechanic known as ATP are all driven by the liver. It is not to say there is a clinical problem with the organ but rather an imbalance known in Chinese medicine as liver stagnation which is comparable to more of a ‘ software ‘ problem in it’s analogy. By using specific protocols of acupuncture points treatment is provided to help to optimize the liver function and bring it back into a  homeostasis balance with the other organs. For example while Thyroxin T-4 is produced by the thyroid the conversion of T-4 to T-3 takes place in either the liver or the small intestines. By inserting small needles under the skin in specified points Acupuncture and Chronic Fatigue can usually have a positive outcome by getting the organs to communicate properly with each other again. As part of the treatment an acupuncturist might also prescribe certain herbal formulas to help address the problem such as, Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang Jia Wei  or  Xiao Chai Hu Tang Jia Wei. Such formulas are safe to ingest and can be found on-line or in any Chinese herb store.
