Acupuncture Insomnia

Acupuncture Insomnia,  Insomnia is a common disorder in western industrialized societies particularly among the aged. It is frequently is divided into two clinical patterns; ‘ Initial insomnia ‘  is difficulty in falling asleep and can be associated with an emotional disturbance or  being too reeved up and ‘ Early Morning Wakening ‘ in which the patient falls asleep normally but awakens several hours before his usual time.  Often this second pattern can have it’s roots in a blood sugar issue.  Utilizing Acupuncture Insomnia is quite common and appears to work well in the treatment of both patterns.  In a recent study by Sjoling M in the Journal Alternative Complementary Medicine a study was conducted with 28 female subjects over a six week period . The study demonstrated that the experimental group had significant sleep improvement over the control group which was receiving sham treatments. In Acupuncture Insomnia the mechanism is the regulating of Yin and Yang to reinforce health and eliminate the pathogens, thus improving sleep. The concept of qi in Chinese Medicine is of central importance particularly when sleep deprivation is due to depression. The ancient Chinese perceived the existence of qi and believed it to be the basic substance from which all movement and substance in the world comes from.  In modern medicine acupuncture can increase the content of y-amino butyric acid. This increases nighttime melatonin production  and thus enhance sleep. A typical course of acupuncture treatment for insomnia is generally 10 treatments over a 6 week period. The needles are quite small in nature and treatment is generally considered painless. Your acupuncturist would select a number of points on the body as well as some on the ear to help activate the sleep centers. Frequently this will involve the heart, kidney, liver and spleen meridians.
