Treating Fibromyalgia with Chiropractic

Treating Fibromyalgia with chiropractic is becoming more of a common practice as clinical results reflect improvement with patients diagnosed with the syndrome. In a study done by Amalu, TODAY’S CHIROPRACTIC May/ June 2000 all 23 patients reported improvement and maintained it after a one year with chiropractic care.  In addition, a second study by Blunt in the JOURNAL OF MANIPULATIVE AND PHYSIOLOGICAL THERAPEUTICS 1977;20(6) demonstrated that all 21 patients reported improvement after 4 weeks of treatment.

So, why does treating Fibromyalgia with chiropractic work so well ? Basically it’s because chiropractic can unlock the natural healing abilities of the body and bring balance back to the nervous system. Fibromyalgia has always been a trash can disease, being more of a syndrome than a specific etiology. It has a wide variation of symptoms from fatigue and radiating / burning muscle pain. Frequently it is accompanied by sleeplessness, irritable bowel syndrome, headaches and brain fog. The traditional medical approach for this is quite limited usually NSAIDS, painkillers and antidepressants. These usually mask the condition and have only partial success for the patient. Chiropractic by contrast has a more unique approach in it’s treatment.

By removing misalignments in the spine called subluxations it helps the body to remove metabolic waste and improve kidney and liver function. This can relieve much of the muscle pain and aid in promoting proper sleep. In a study by Wolfe in THE AMERICA JOURNAL OF MEDICINE it was found that 45% of individuals who had fibromyalgia experienced moderate to great improvement upon seeing a chiropractor.
